Quinta de Covela celebrates its first harvest in three years
For the first time in three years,
Quinta de Covela was buzzing with activity around harvest time. The picking of the grapes this year marks the formal first step in the return of the COVELA wines to the Portuguese and international market in 2013.
After a period of inactivity, the quinta was bought in 2011 by William Smith & Lima Lda, and its new owners, Brazilian Marcelo Lima and Briton Tony Smith
, are injecting new life into this historic estate on the right bank of the Douro river.
In addition to an energetic local crew from the surrounding village of São Tomé de Covelas, the harvest, which ran for two weeks, brought a cosmopolitan bunch of volunteers to Covela
– from Lisbon, Brazil, Áustria and Slovenia.
Enophiles who have been missing Covela’s fresh whites and characterful reds can expect new releases early in 2013.
